When in Japan: Four-day Itinerary in Tokyo

Tokyo is definitely one of the most expensive cities not only in Japan but all over the world. Nevertheless, budget travel is always possible. One of the best ways to travel cheap in Tokyo is to visit places based on area.

Day 1: West Tokyo
Places: Meiji Shrine - Yoyogi Park - Takeshita Street
Suggested time of visit: morning / daytime

1. Harajuku station
This tour in west Tokyo covers the Harajuku area. Begin by alighting at Harajuku station, which is served by JR Yamanote line. Walk your way towards the first stop which is at Meiji Shrine.

2. Meiji Shrine
The Meiji Shrine is a tourist landmark known for its religious and cultural significance to the Japanese. A few of the notable areas in this shrine include the Torii gate, Barrels of Sake, and the shrine itself (locally called as Meiji Jingu).

3. Yoyogi Park
Walk back at the torii gate entrance of Meiji Shrine to head east going to the Yoyogi Park. It's a huge park known especially during the sakura season that usually runs from late March to May.

4. Takeshita Street
Next, go back to the street of Harajuku station and head north to reach Takeshita street. This area usually gets jam packed with people wearing costumes who mostly follow the Japanese subculture of Cosplaying.

Places: Hachiko statue - Shibuya intersection - Izakaya
Suggested time of visit: afternoon to evening

1. Shinjuku station
This route in west Tokyo covers the Shibuya area. Begin at Shinjuku station, which is one of the bigger stations with several lines. Make sure to go to te JR Hachiko exit to head to the Hachiko Statue.

2. Hachiko Statue
The famous dog Hachiko marked a name after people noticed that his dog repeatedly went back at the Shibuya station, as if waiting for somebody. Soon it was found out this dog was waiting for his master, who already passed away.

3. Shibuya intersection
A trip to Tokyo won't be complete without crossing the most famous intersection the world: the Shibuya intersection. It's a very busy area with several tall buildings that are mostly shopping malls, shops, and restaurants.

4. Izakaya
Tokyo is usually cold at night, so spend the night drinking and talking with friends in one of the izakayas, the local version of a pub. Some Japanese men pass by the izakaya to drink and unwind after a long day at work.

Day 2: Central Tokyo

Places: Tsukiji market - Imperial Palace
Suggested time of visit: morning / daytime

1. Tsukiji station
The nearest station from the first stop is the Tsujiki station served by the Hibiya line.

2. Tsukiji market
Begin the day early to check out fresh seafood being delivered at one of the biggest wet markets in Tokyo, the Tsukiji Market. Expect the freshest seafood dishes in the restaurants around, but expect the prices to bit a more expensive than in other areas in Tokyo.

3. Ginza station
Return to the Tsukiji station of the Hibiya line and alight at Ginza station.

4. Tokyo station
From Ginza station of the Hibiya line, transfer to the Maronouchi line to alight at the Tokyo station.

5. Imperial Palace
The Tokyo Imperial Palace is the official residence of the emperor of Japan and his family. The palace itself may be closed to public but it's a complex with other attractions including the Nijubashi Bridge, Edo Castle Ruins, and Imperial Palace East Gardens.

Places: Sensoji Temple - Tokyo Sky Tree
Suggested time to visit: afternoon / nighttime

1. Tokyo station

2. Asakusa station

3. Sensoji Temple

4. Tokyo Sky Tree station
Coming from Sensoji Temple, return to the Asakusa station but make sure it's the Tobu Skytree line. Alight in the next station, which is the Tokyo Skytree station.

Day 3: South Tokyo
Places: Diver City Tokyo Plaza - Aqua City Odaiba - Rainbow Bridge - Odaiba Statue of Liberty
Suggested time of visit: full day


Day 4: East Tokyo
Places: Ameyoko Street - Ueno Park - Kaneiji
Suggest time to visit: morning / daytime


Places: Akihabara arcades - Don Quijote - Maid cafes
Suggested time to visit: afternoon
