When in Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur Overnight

Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is indeed a transfer hub in Southeast Asia. It is a pit stop of the numerous connecting flights daily. Planes and people come and go here, so somehow it gets unnoticed without giving the city a chance to show off itself.

The truth is, after being to Kuala Lumpur the third time around, I realized that it deserves a second look. There is some beauty hidden in the busy bustling capital.

Coming from a backpacking in Laos to celebrate my birthday, I landed in Kuala Lumpur to spend an overnight. I knew it was too short, but I just spent the most out of it.

Cheap Way from Airport to City Center
While there is a non-stop train service in Kuala Lumpur called KLIA Ekspres, which connects the airport and the city center priced at RM 55 (PHP 633) one-way and RM 100 (PHP 1,151) two-way, there is a cheaper way to get to the center.

First, I took a bus at the airport's (KLIA 2) arrival area going to Nilai. Although travel time took an hour due to multiple stops, the bus fare was only 1.50 RM (PHP 17).

Next, from the Nilai bus terminal, I just walked behind to ride a train. This Nilai station is served by the Tg.Malim-Gemas line (blue line) of KTM Komuter train.

This blue line stops at Bandar Tasik Selatan station, which is the central bus station in Kuala Lumpur. I actually went to this station on the next day to ride a bus going to Malacca, Malaysia.
KL Sentral is considered as a central station with numerous interchanges available here. the train fare from Nilai station to KL Sentral station costs 7 RM (PHP 80) in cash. Travel time is approximately 30 minutes.

Accommodation Backpacker Style
From KL Sentral Station, I walked a few minutes to pass through the huge shopping mall NU Sentral and then cross the street to Jalan Thambipillay to drop my luggage at PODS Backpackers Home and Café. It is a small dormitory-style accommodation meant for short stays.
It offers both bunk beds in a shared room and single/double beds in a private room.
Regardless of room type, all facilities are shared including the bathroom, kitchen, and lounge area.

Kuala Lumpur At Night
I could not do morning activities anymore, so I looked for places to visit during nighttime. And Kuala Lumpur did not disappoint.

Couchsurfing is very active in Malaysia. I met a hospitable local who brought me around. We also met a lot of travelers throughout the night.
I saw Petronas Towers first in 2012, during the Malaysia stopover of our Royal Caribbean cruise. But it was my first time to see it during nighttime. I find it more beautiful at night.
The Petronas is an amazing sight. It was once the tallest building in Asia.

The Sentral Market serves as a good place for shopping especially local products and souvenir items. Prices are relatively cheaper. It is also possible to haggle for the price.
Inside Sentral Market, I got to try Nasi Lemak that is considered as Malaysia’s national dish.
It is so famous that even the murals take pride of the dish.
